About the Baby Blanket

The goal of designing this blanket was to make a beginner friendly baby blanket that had interesting texture and design! There is nothing wrong with a good old double crochet afghan but isn’t it so fun to make something simple that looks complex?  It doesn’t matter your skill level, you will find this pattern to be easy, engaging and enjoyable!

The main body of the blanket is made in all half double crochets. By working in the back loop only, you get that unique striping effect of the stitches (you can see the same idea in this blanket cardigan) created by the front loop and that strange 3rd loop from the half double crochet. The stripes show on both sides making the baby blanket completely reversible.

The thick border is simply seven rounds of single crochets. The front of the single crochets does look a bit different than the back but both sides are equally as beautiful.

The final edging is done in a crab stitch also known as the reverse single crochet.

If you are struggling with the crab stitch and want to keep this completely beginner friendly, doing an edging of one single crochet and chain in each stitch is a great way to simplify the edge. It still creates a beautiful finish for the blanket.

Easy Crochet Baby Blanket for a Girl

Skill Level: Beginner

Materials:

• US size L (8 mm) crochet hook – Amazon carries my favorite hooks – in fact, I wrote an entire review about why these hooks are amazing.
• Large Eye Tapestry Needle
• 6 skeins # 5 bulky weight yarn – 3.5 oz / 114 yds

Abbreviations:

ch(s): chain(s)
hdc(s): half double crochet(s)
fhdc: foundation half double crochet
BLO: back loop only
sc: single crochet
sl st: slip stitch
sp: space
st: stitch

Gauge:

4″ x 4″ =10 hdc x 7 rows

Finished Size:

approx. 32″ x 41″

Notes:

When working the sides of the border on round 1 (R1), you will be placing 3 single crochets for every two rows of hdcs.

For the final round (R7) , as an alternative the crab stitch edging, you can (sc, ch 1) in each st around joining with a sl st to the first sc.

Pattern Instructions:

Row 1: Foundation hdc 73 or Ch 75 and hdc in the 2nd ch from hook and each ch across, turn.

Row 2: ch 1, hdc in the BLO of each st, turn

Repeat Row 2 for a total of 66 rows

Border:

R1: From the final row of the blanket, ch 1, turn blanket to the side.

• • Side 1: Sc at the end of each row and in large space between every 2 rows, ch 1 before working the bottom edge.

When you sc in the large space between the two rows, be sure to work around the strand of yarn which is a little lower than the first strand of yarn.

• Bottom edge: Sc in each st across the bottom, ch 1
• Side 2: Sc at the end of each row and in large space between every 2 rows, ch 1
• Top side: Sc in each st, join with sl st to first sc of side 1 (sl st will act as a ch-1 sp)

R2-5: ch 1, sc in each st around putting a (sc, ch1, sc) in each ch-1sp at the corners, join with sl st to first sc of side 1(sl st will act as a ch-1 sp)

R6: ch 1, sc in each st around putting 3 scs in each ch-1 at the corners, join with sl st to first sc of side 1.

R7: ch 1, crab stitch (reverse single crochet) around the entire edge. (How to Crochet the Crab Stitch) Join with sl st. Weave in ends.
