This gorgeous ear warmer is quick to make but I put it at a skill level somewhere between easy and intermediate. It has a combo of stitches that you’ve likely never done before and while they aren’t hard, they will need a bit of focus at first.

Once you get the hang of it, you’ll love how soft and squishy these ear warmers are!

Yarn to use for the Ear Warmers

The first ear warmer I made was in the Lion Brand Landscapes yarn. Those bright jewel tones just make me swoon! I love how the color changes throughout the yarn and I wish I would have bought more when I found it on sale!

I really wanted to see the pattern in a neutral color, because many of you are like me… leaning toward the solid colors that go with everything. Vanna’s Choice yarn in Linen is one of my favorite neutrals and the size/weight of the yarn is really similar to Landscapes.

(I’ve heard rumors that the Vanna’s Choice yarn is on it’s way out but as of writing this, it is still available on Lion Brand’s website and on Amazon. I don’t know for sure if the rumors are true, but if you love this yarn, I’d stock up now.)

Eliza Ear Warmer Free Crochet Pattern

Skill Level: Easy to Intermediate

Materials:

Abbreviations:

ch(s): chain(s)
sc(s): single crochet(s)
sk: skip
sl st: slip stitch
ds(s): double stitch aka petit pois stitch (see stitch instructions)
puff: puff stitch (see stitch instructions)
sp(s): space(s)

Gauge: 4” x 2” = Done in stitch pattern (rows 3-6) – 6 puff stitches by 4 rows

Finished Size: approx 3.75” w by 20” around

Notes: To adjust the size of the ear warmer, keep the starting chain an even number.

The ear warmer also works up nicely in Vanna’s Choice yarn (sample used approximately 2 oz in Linen.)

Stitch Instructions:

Puff Stitch: [yo, insert hook into st, pull up a loop] 3 times, yo, pull through all 7 loops on hook, ch 1

Double Stitch aka petit pois: insert hook into the same stitch as the last completed stitch, pull up a loop, insert hook into the next stitch, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through all three loops on the hook. (You are essentially doing a single crochet two together (sc2tog) but you will not be decreasing.

Working in the ch-1 vs working into the ch-1 sp: When you work into the ch-1 of the puff, you’ll be working into the last stitch of the entire puff – you ch 1 to secure the puff. When working into the ch-1 sp, work around the entire ch-1 instead of into the stitch.
