I first used the Diamond Lace Stitch in the Diamond Lace Crochet Baby Blanket after finding a graph for it on Pinterest made by Tejiendo Peru.

(If you’d like to see the graph, the easiest way is to search “diamond lace stitch” on Pinterest.)

When I finished that Diamond Lace Crochet Baby Blanket, I knew I wanted to use the stitch again (and maybe again and again) in more designs.  It is fun and simple and it makes such a gorgeous pattern that looks amazing blocked or unblocked, plus it is made up almost entirely of chains and single crochets, with double crochet stitches thrown in there every so often!

Yarn Used For The Mandala Yarn Scarf Pattern

For this beautiful scarf, I knew I wanted to use a self-striping yarn and Lion Brand Yarn Mandala was just what I had in mind. Mandala is an acrylic category 3 light weight yarn.

While I absolutely love the Lion Brand Mandala Warlock colorway, I did not love the lightest color of the group so………….

I cut it out! I almost feel wrong saying that. It felt wrong doing it, but it was so right! The color, while beautiful, just didn’t flow.

I used three cakes of Mandala in Warlock, but it wasn’t 3 full cakes since I cut out an entire color from each cake. Also, the third cake was wound quite differently than the other two so I ended up rolling half of it into a ball, cutting, and working through that ball first to maintain the same striping pattern.

The wrap turned out even fancier and even more beautiful than I imagined! My plan was to make something I could wrap myself in as the evenings get cooler, but it is so lovely I think I will end up wearing it out.

It also works as a great, large scarf.  No matter how I end up using it, I am excited that it will look nice draped on the side of my couch when not in use!

  1. Hi. This is a beautiful stitch but I’m having a problem getting it to look right. I’m following the pattern correctly but it is coming out kind of wavy. It doesn’t lay flat and the negative spaces don’t stand out as much as they do in the pictures. I know blocking will help, but I want to make sure before I do the whole thing. I’m confused about the yarn size vs hook size. Here you are using Lion Mandala, which is a 3 with an I hook so that is what I tried first. Then in the video they use worsted (4) with an H hook. Normally I use a G or F with the Mandala but I tried a G and that looked worse! The label on the mandala recommends an H so I could try that too. I’m wondering if I need to adjust my tension or just keep going and it will flatten out eventually. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    1. Hi Nicole,

The pattern didn’t lay flat until I carefully steam blocked it. You can see the difference vs the Diamond Lace Baby Blanket which wasn’t blocked as have that lovely wave to it.

  2. My sister is starting chemo for lung cancer. my love language is yarn. i have nearly finished this shawl for her. i hope she feels loved when she wraps it around her.

    1. I am sure she will Dana! I am sorry your sister is going through that. Blessings to you both.

  3. I started the pattern and I’m stuck at the end of row 2. It says “ending with sc in the last ch 5”. I tried watching the video tutorial to see where to insert the hook but I couldn’t see where. Can you please send or post a picture of the stitch? Thank you!

    1. Hi Michelle I don’t have a picture of the stitch handy but you are going to sc in the ch 5 space at the end of the row. You can also check out the chart that is mentioned in the post if you need a better visual.

  4. I know that the comments are older but I was wondering if anyone made this pattern in a lighter weight yarn. I am trying to decide on a pattern for my daughter to wear with her wedding dress. She likes simple designs and this would be a great pattern. If you have, would you include the yarn you used and the size of the hook. Thanks so much

  5. Fran Moore says:

I finished the pattern, and love the way it turned out!
    Thank you!

  6. Hi found this one Pinterest love it I have some Lion Brand Landscapes would I be able to use this yarn instead as I have 4 skeins of it? Thanks

    1. Hi Anne, I think it would look lovely in Landscapes. You’ll probably want to chain less to start since Landscapes is quite a bit thicker than Mandala. I’d love to see pictures when you finish!

  7. what does the abbreveatin SP mean?

    1. Hi Nicole! Sp stands for space

  8. it does look lovely, thank you

  9. Jess, I just love all your work. You always make it so easy for me. Just keep doing what you are doing.

  10. Hi ther, I will begin by saying that I love your diamond shawl pattern and will be attempting it even though I am new to crochet. Your finished product is 19 x 74. However, 92 sts is far from
74”. Lol sorry can you clarify. Tks.

    1. Hi Marianne! I’m so glad you are going to attempt it. You will be working the width and and adding rows to increase the length. I hope that makes sense. So the 92 sts will be for the 19” side

  11. Laura Weldon says:

Just curious…. Did you block your wrap to get it to flatten out a bit? I am only a few rows in, but it looks like it could be pretty wavy.

    1. I did block it! Although it really looks pretty either way.

      1. Hi Jess, i just finished this gorgeous shawl. I love it, not sure if it will be a gift or I’ll keep it. I do want to block it, what method did you use? I’ve never blocked anything before.
I’d attach a photo but can’t see a way to do so

        1. Hi April! I’d love to see a photo but I’m not sure how to attach one either. Other people have done it so I know there is a way! This was one of my first blocking projects so you are not alone. I have a garment steamer which does not get very hot that I used very carefully. I pinned it down to a pack n play mat and slowly steamed half at a time. If I hadn’t been so impatient, I would have just wet blocked it, letting it dry over night and not worry about steaming it.

          1. Thanks! I don’t have a steamer. I’ll look up how to wet block it. Again, beautiful pattern. Thanks for sharing it!

    1. That’s great Pam! I can’t wait to see your finished product!

  12. This is just beautiful! I love the yarn you used! What a great pattern!

  13. ALLIE HOBART says:

Hello, I discovered this gorgeous pattern last night and thanks so much for it! I started working on it right away. Someone may have asked about this already, but I am wondering about the single crocheting into beginning/end of the chain-3 space: Are you crocheting “loose” into the space itself (in which case the SC could move around), or into the beginning or end chain of the ch-3 space? Appreciate any clarification you can give me. LOL, I wondered the same thing about the foundation chain-92 + 5, so thanks for asking & answering that. It made perfect sense once I saw the answer.

    1. Hi Allie! That’s a great question. You are crocheting around the chain instead of into an individual stitch in the chain but the sc shouldn’t move around too much. Instead of crocheting in the middle of the chain, like you usually do with a chain space, you are doing a sc right at the beginning of the chain next to the previous sc. let me know if you need further clarification! So glad you took the time to ask 🙂

      1. ALLIE HOBART says:

Thanks for your response!! I’ll let you know how it turns out.

  14. Such a pretty pattern! Thank you so much for sharing! Pinned it to my Crochet Shawls board!

  15. Heidi Clymer says:

You know Wal-Mart sells the yarn at 1/3 the cost of Amazon

    1. Yes Heidi! My Walmart just started to stock it!!!!! I’m so excited! Lion Brand has a map on their website showing which walmarts stock it. http://www.lionbrand.com/mandala-yarn-in-stores . A couple of weeks before they stocked it in the store here I was able to ship it to the store but I don’t know if that is available everywhere.

      1. The mandala yarn is only available in Walmart Superstores for about $5 each. They are not the same as a regular Walmart. Usually the superstores are open 24 hours.

        1. I didn’t realize that there was a difference! I thought all Walmart’s were open 24/7.

          1. Our Michael’s Store sells the cakes, often on sale. Not sure about the particular mandala coloring, however then they have 40% off coupons. Might be worth looking into if it’s near you or if you can order from there over Amazon.

          2. I didn’t know Michael’s was selling mandala cakes! That’s awesome! Thanks for the tips Shirley.

  16. Jennifer Jones says:

I’m confused about the foundation row. Where it says chain 5, does that mean you add 5 chains to the 92 you’ve already chained, for a total of 97?

    1. Hi Jennifer. That’s exactly what it means. Writing it that way makes it easier for you to change the size if you would like by adding or subtracting from starting chains. Thanks for asking!

      1. Jennifer Jones says:

Wonderful! Thanks for the quick response. ☺️

        1. My pleasure! I hope you enjoy making it and don’t hesitate to ask if you have other questions 🙂

  17. Hi, Jesse, did you cut the yarn and start each new color at the beginning of a row? In the pictures the rows look so perfect. It’s lovely!

    1. I didn’t do any cutting other than cutting out the lightest color of the cake! That is one of the great things about this stitch and self striping yarn-you barely notice the transition.

      1. Awesome! Thank you!

  18. Lauren Kuik says:

I sent you a message in ravelry about a pdf of your pattern. Thanks for your lovely design.

  19. Vanessa E Brown says:

I would also love a PDF. Old eyes can’t work off a cell phone.

    1. Hi Vanessa, I added links to a PDF you can purchase from Crafsty for a small fee. Hope that helps!

      1. Vanessa E Brown says:

        Thank you sooooo soooo much

  20. Having problem with row 3. Is there is there something missing please help several of us have looked at this and cannot figure it out

    1. Hi Cheryl, could you tell me where you are stuck? I’ll take a look and see if I can spot a problem.

      1. Starting row 3. Two seasoned crocheters couldn’t figure it out and I’m the novice being taught

        1. That’s awesome you have friends teaching you! I’m going to type out the beginning instructions in a bit different wording to see if that helps. So after you chain 1 you are going to do 2 single crochets, one in the single crochet in the row below and one right next to that in the beginning of the chain 3 space. Then chain 3. Skip 1 single crochet and do 3 single crochets in the next 3 single crochets. Chain 3 and skip another sc (you are doing 3 scs in the center 3 stitches of the 5 scs below.) let me know if that helps! I hope it doesn’t confuse things more. If you are a visual learner there is a great graph of the stitch that can be found on Pinterest: search “diamond lace stitch”

          1. I am a different Cheryl and am just wanting to clarify your instructions even more! 🙂 So the first SC of Row 3 is in the ending SC of the previous row, correct? I was a little confused when you said “row below” also. I kept thinking it should be in the row below the one I was now working into. Thank you.

          2. Hi different Cheryl! Yes, you are correct. The first sc of row 3 goes in the last sc of row 2. Happy Hooking!

  21. Hi Jess, thank you for the pattern, its beautiful!! For those of use unfamiliar with mandala-cakes, could you please estimate the yardage for this project?

    1. Hi Emmy! The 3 Mandala cakes would equal about 1770 yds but I did cut out an entire color from each cake so the total yardage would be less but not much less. Hope that helps!

  22. My daughter sent this lovely design to me – problem is – I knit… anyone know how to duplicate the design using 2 needles? I am such a crochet novice; my attempt was not even close ????. Thx

    1. Melissa, I wish my knitting skills were amazing enough to translate this! There should be a video soon so maybe you’ll be able to grow in your crochet skills.

      1. That is GORGEOUS! I might have to pick up my needles again.

    1. Great idea! Hopefully that can happen soon 🙂

  23. Please post a video tutorial for visual learners!

  24. Could you tell me how to save this so I can come back to when I’m ready to start it ? Please.

    1. Hi Monti! If you are on Ravelry, you can save it on there. Just search “wrap me in Diamonds”. You can also save it on Pinterest for later. If you aren’t on either of those sites, book marking it in your browser allows you to save it. Each browser is a little different on how to bookmark. Let me know if this helps!

  25. Illistine Banks says:

Simply beautiful!!!! Is a PDF version available?

    1. Hi Illistine, I do not currently have a PDF available but I hope to work on that sometime soon 🙂

    2. Illistine, the PDF is now available for purchase from Craftsy. I’ve included a link in the blog post. THANK YOU!
