Happy accidents are wonderful things. I stumbled upon this modified cluster stitch during a failed attempt at another stitch. Since it is a unique crochet stitch, a tutorial of how to crochet the Modified Cluster stitch seemed appropriate.
The stitch is actually very easy and almost identical to a cluster stitch. Starting a row with a Modified Cluster Stitch is a bit different than doing the modified cluster in the middle of the row, so we will start at the start!
In the photos below there is already a complete row of modified cluster stitches, and a row of hdcs. The row of hdcs makes it easier to see where the next stitch is, plus it is how the pattern is written for the Triangles Crochet Scarf which uses this stitch! The tutorial begins on the third row with the start of a row modified cluster stitch.
How to Start a Row with a Modified Cluster Stitch
Chain 2, yarn over and insert hook into the first stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook). (The chain 2 to start the row serve as the first stitch of the cluster which is what makes it different from the modified cluster stitch in the middle of a row.)
Yarn over and pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook)
Yarn over and insert hook into the next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop (4 loops on hook)
Yarn over and pull through 2 loops (3 loops on hook)
Yarn over and pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook)
To complete the stitch, yarn over and pull through the last two loops
