Since the spider stitch, used in this blanket, is one of my favorite stitch combos, I was surprised to realize I hadn’t used it in a throw before now. I had used the stitch combo to make up the body of the Buffalo Plaid Baby Blanket, but not for a larger blanket.

This blanket is especially simple because you don’t even need to add a border. The stitches create a beautiful, wavy pattern along the sides of the throw, making it look nicely finished.
Quick Pattern Details
Skill Level: Easy (beginners who have a good grasp of basic stitches should be fine.)
Finished Size: Approximately 44” x 51”
Yarn: Category 4, Worsted Weight Acrylic
No Border Needed: The natural edge of the stitch creates a beautiful, built-in wavy finish along the sides.
Stitches and Design
I absolutely love the definition that the spider stitch creates. Not only does it feel amazing because it is dense, but not stiff, it creates vertical textured ridges that look as great as they feel. The fabric is warm but also maintains good flow.
If you aren’t familiar with the spider stitch pattern, don’t worry, it is easy! You only need to know how to single crochet, chain, and how to work into a chain space. I have a full photo tutorial for how to crochet the spider stitch if you want additional step-by-step instructions.
A larger 8.0 mm hook is intentionally used with this worsted-weight yarn to give the blanket a beautiful, flowing drape instead of making it stiff.

Yarn
My goal with this design was to create a relaxing, easy pattern that still delivers a visually interesting fabric. The spider stitch alone accomplishes this goal, but paired with an ombre yarn, the whole look is elevated.

Just Yarn Worsted Value Ombre by Premier Yarns worked so well with this stitch pattern. The subtle horizontal shift in color pairs so nicely with the vertical texture created by the stitches. The yarn itself was so easy to work with. It isn’t super soft, but it also isn’t rough and scratchy. I found it to be a really affordable and good quality value yarn.

Any color of worsted-weight acrylic is going to work for this pattern, but the ombre effect really adds to it. I included a few substitution ideas below.
