The Sandia Crest Shawl is perfect for those cool evenings when you need a little something extra to keep warm. It’s a simple two-row repeat, featuring a unique but easy triangle stitch that gives the shawl a patterned lacy look.

Last spring, I had a semi-formal event to attend on what turned out to be a cold and rainy day. I grabbed my Cedar Lake Shawl to wear with my dress, but I found myself wishing I had something a little lighter. From there, the idea for this lightweight wrap was born.

Not long after that, we headed to New Mexico to visit family. While there, the kids and I rode the Sandia Peak Tramway. The views from the top of the Sandia Mountains are unreal and inspired the name of the shawl. I highly recommend riding the tram if you ever find yourself in Albuquerque.

Shawl Crochet Stitches

At first glance, the stitches in this shawl may look complicated, but you’ll be happy to know they’re actually quite easy to crochet. You’ll work a simple two-row repeat alternating between rows of half double crochets and rows of a Modified Cluster stitch (Triangle stitch).

I’ve been in love with the Triangle stitch since I figured out how to make it. Not only is it easy to crochet, but it also creates a crisp, defined look that adds so much interest to the fabric.

The Triangle stitch is worked similarly to a cluster stitch or a double crochet 3 together. An extra yarn over brings the tops of the stitches together, creating the defined triangle shape.

Yarn

This was the first time working with Palette Yarn by Knit Picks, and I ended up loving it even more than I expected. It’s an affordable fingering weight, 100% wool yarn that comes in a wider range of colors than you’ll know what to do with.

The heathered yarns in this line are even more beautiful in person than they first appear. The colors are rich, deep, and sometimes unexpected. Take a close look at the color options, and you’ll often spot subtle accent colors woven into the heathered shades. Those little variations are what give the colors so much depth. Even the solid colors are so vibrant and beautiful.

Skill Level

This shawl is rated at an easy skill level. The main stitches and skills you’ll need to know are chains, half double crochets, and working in chain spaces. The Triangle Stitches are explained in the special stitches section below, and you can follow the photo tutorial if you want extra instructions.

Notes

The beginning ch 1 does not count as a stitch.

The Triangle Stitch is similar to a double crochet 3 together (dc3tog), but instead of pulling through all four loops on the hook to finish the stitch, youโ€™ll pull through three loops, yarn over, and pull through the remaining two loops, giving the stitch a more distinct triangle shape.

To adjust the size, keep your starting chain a multiple of 3.
