Shawls are wonderful because they’re so versatile—you can wear them over a dress for a night out, toss them on as a light layer for a casual day, or wrap them up snugly for a cozy evening at home. Whether you’re crocheting for yourself or crafting a special gift, this shawl is sure to be a staple for many occasions.
The design is based on the Cedar Arches Shawl, but this one is made using DK weight yarn and is worked lengthwise. If you’d like a triangle version, don’t miss the Cedar Creek Shawl.
Stitches
This shawl is crocheted with a mix of a single crochet moss stitch and a half double crochet moss stitch for a beautifully unique look.
Don’t miss my crochet moss stitch tutorial, where I share an easy approach, that’s a bit different from standard moss stitch instructions, which gives you a clean edge to your fabric. I think you’ll love the polished finish it gives!
The edges of the half double crochet rows follow the same technique, but you’ll place the last stitch in the 2nd chain of the turning chain.
You can customize the size of this rectangular shawl by adjusting the width or length. For length changes, make sure your starting chain is an even number. To change the width, add or subtract sets of 21 rows to keep the open stitch pattern intact—each set will adjust the length by about 4.5 inches.
Yarn
Do you have a go-to yarn you can’t get enough of? I definitely do – Premier Everyday Anti-Pilling Yarn is my favorite! I love how it feels to crochet with, adore the beautiful drape it gives my projects, and appreciate the amazing range of colors available.
I use their worsted-weight acrylic more frequently, but for this wrap, I grabbed their DK-weight anti-pilling yarn for a slightly lighter feel for the shawl.
Did you know that Premier Yarn has a reward program that is a huge perk? You can earn points with every purchase to go towards even more yarn. If you sign up through my link, you’ll get a coupon, and I’ll earn rewards too – win-win!

Skill Level
The Cedar Lake Shawl is great for all skill levels except absolute beginners. You’ll need to know the following skills:
- Basic stitches: single crochet, half double crochet, chain
- Working into the turning chain
- Working in chain spaces
- Keeping count of a LONG starting chain
It’s an easy pattern that you’ll fly through while binging your favorite show. Just pay attention to which part of the stitch pattern you’re on and don’t do 12 rows of sc moss stitch when you only need 3 while watching Despicable Me 4 with your kids. Ask me how I know to avoid that.

Notes
This easy shawl is made using the moss stitch and a moss stitch variation. The starting and ending instructions of the rows may be slightly different than other versions of the moss stitch.
By chaining one and the beginning of the row and working into each chain one (turning chain) to end the next row, you’ll create a smooth edge of your fabric that looks finished even without a border.
When you are working into the hdc rows, you’ll put your last stitch in the 2nd chain of the turning chain of the previous row. The chain 1 or chain 2 to start a row does not count as a stitch.
The basics of the pattern: You’ll do 12 rows of sc moss stitch, 3 rows of hdc moss stitch, 3 rows of sc moss stitch, then 3 rows of hdc moss stitch. Those 21 rows will be repeated for a total of 4, 21 row repeats, and then finished with 12 rows of sc moss stitch.
To adjust the size of your shawl, keep your starting chain an even number. To change the width, add or subtract sets of 21 rows to keep the open stitch pattern intact—each set will adjust the length by about 4.5 inches.
