I got the idea to turn a granny square into a small Christmas Tree from Sarah at Repeat Crafter Me. She used a traditional granny square to make the cutest trees.

The nice part about using a traditional granny square is making the trees in multiple sizes. With the Fountain Flower square, you are a bit more limited with size options unless you change the size of your yarn and hook.

Stitches

You’ll start with a magic circle and then use half double crochet, chain stitches, puff stitches, single crochet, and double crochet to make the square. While most of the stitches are basic, you’ll be placing them in ways that require a good grasp on parts of crochet stitches.

Yarn

These trees are a perfect scrap yarn project. You can grab any leftover worsted-weight yarn, use a combo of colors if you’d like, and whip up some unique Christmas ornaments quickly.

I used Anti-Pilling Everyday Yarn from Premier Yarns for my trees because I had just the colors I wanted on hand. If you order directly from Premier Yarns, be sure to sign up for their reward program where you’ll get a coupon and reward points and I’ll get reward points.

Skill Level

Once you get the hang of the square, they are super easy to make and whip up in a couple of minutes. However, the pattern is rated as an intermediate skill level because it uses stitches and stitch placements that aren’t basic stitches at a beginner/easy level.

Folding into a tree

Turn the square so one corner is at the top then fold the two adjacent sides until they line up in the middle of the square. Whip stitch the sides together through the outer loops of each side. Fold the bottom corner up to close the bottom of the tree. Whip stitch through the outer loops. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Optional: Cut a 12” piece of ribbon and secure it to the bottom of the tree (I tied it like you tie on fringe) then add a large wooden bead to the ribbon.
