This round placemat fits with the Country Crochet patterns as it uses similar stitches and the same yarn. Normally, for the Country patterns, I use Ecru and Overcast (gray) in the samples, but I just wasn’t feeling it for this crochet round table mat. I really like it in a solid color.

I know it would look great if the spider stitch rounds were done in the Overcast color or in a different contrasting color. That’s what’s great about crocheting for your own home decor: you can make your projects just how you want them to match your existing color schemes as long as you find the correct yarn colors.

You can even make multiple sets for different holidays to add some festive spirit to your dining table. A table mat set would look so cute with matching Country Crochet Coasters which are pretty much a mini version of the placemats.

Yarn for the Round Crochet Placemat Pattern

Speaking of yarn colors, Lily Sugarn’ Cream comes in at least 39 different solid colors plus a large variety of multi-colored versions. It shouldn’t be hard to find yarn in colors that work with any color scheme.

l love Lily Sugar’n Cream cotton yarn for any project where I want a sturdy and washable cotton. It isn’t the softest cotton to work with, but the fabric it makes wears so well which is why is usually grab it first when I’m working on a kitchen project.

There are many great alternative options to Sugar’n Cream if you want to use different cotton yarn. Premier Home Cotton, Peaches & Creme, Lion Brand Re-Up, or Knit Picks Dishie would all work as substitutes. Whatever you choose, just keep in mind to check the washing instructions and make sure that you are going to be able to clean the placemats how you’d like to clean them.

Stitches for the Round Placemat Crochet Pattern

While this pattern uses basic crochet stitches: single crochets, chains, and slip stitches, it isn’t a beginner pattern. I do think it is an easy crochet placemat pattern as long as you are familiar with working in the round, increases, and you understand the basics of spider stitches.

The spider stitch pattern is a single crochet, chain 1, single crochet all in the same stitch. When you work multiple rows of spider stitches, you’ll be working the single crochet, chain 1, single crochet into the chain 1 space of the spider stitch in the previous round.

The final round is a variation on the spider stitch that has a chain 2 between two single crochet stitches instead of a chain 1. It’s not too much different but it does allow more exaggerated points at the edge of the fabric.

Abbreviations:

sc(s): single crochet(s)
sl st: slip stitch
ch: chain
inc: increase (work 2 scs in the same stitch)
st(s): stitch(es)
sp: space

Gauge: 2” = 8 rounds from center

Finished Size: approximately 16” in diameter

Pattern Notes:

The ch 1 at the beginning of each round does not count as a stitch

inc is used when you work 2 single crochet stitches into the same stitch

Parentheses () are used to indicate there are multiple stitches worked into the same stitch or chain space

A number followed by sc without parenthesis indicates you will work one single crochet in the next number of stitches. Example 8 sc means to work one single crochet into the next 8 stitches

The spider stitch is a (sc, ch 1, sc) worked in the same stitch. On the rounds with spider stitches, the stitch count is given in number of spider stitches since they are quicker to count.

The placemat can benefit from blocking especially if it is looking more like a hexagon than a smooth circular shape.
