Sometimes you just need something cute to corral random items. Enter the Bella Crochet Bowl! Made with 100% Bulky weight cotton yarn (Lion Brand’s Side Dish yarn) it is quick, easy, and sturdy! Use it on your coffee table to keep track of remotes or on a side table to contain your yarn and hooks.
Making a Crochet Bowl
The bowl has a super simple construction. You’ll start with the bottom, making a flat round of single crochets.
Next, you’ll half double crochet in the back loop of your last round of single crochets. There are no increases in this round so the stitches will start to pull in to form the sides of the bowl.
You’ll keep working half double crochets but instead of working through the top 2 loops like normal, you’ll work under all 3 loops of the stitch below.
The stitches are less flexible than regular hdcs but we are still using a fairly large hook so the sides aren’t stiff like you’d want in a basket.
Finally, we’ll finish it off with a round of slip stitches in a contrasting color. I love that this gives you the option to have a super neutral bowl but easily add a pop of color that matches your decor.
Yarn
This is the third project I’ve done using Side Dish yarn. (See the face scrubbies and pot holders.)
It is unlike any yarn I’ve worked with before. Super bulky, soft cotton. It’s so fun!
As I’ve been working with it, I keep thinking, “I wonder how this would work up as a….”
That’s exactly how we got to this bowl. As I worked the potholder I knew I needed to try the yarn in some type of crochet basket.
It looks like Side Dish Yarn has been discontinued which is super sad. You can hold 3 worsted weight strands of cotton yarn together to get the same effect which also gives you plenty more color options.
