Stitches

This scarf blends two moss stitch variations—the traditional single crochet moss stitch and a half double crochet moss stitch which creates a smooth texture with a stunningly soft, flowy drape. The stitches allow you to enjoy the warmth and coziness of the chunky yarn without the extra bulk.

If you haven’t worked the moss stitch before, it is super easy and I have a step-by-step photo tutorial that you can follow.

The moss stitch is a simple stitch pattern that uses single crochets and chains. You single crochet, chain, skip a stitch, and single crochet in the next stitch. When you work the next row you’ll work the same pattern but all your single crochets will be worked into the chain spaces of the row below.

For the variation, you’ll be using half double crochet stitches every other row instead of the single crochet stitches. It creates a lovely fabric that has small holes but a smooth and warm texture.

Yarn

For this scarf, I used Premier Puzzle yarn which is a category 5, Bulky weight yarn that is 100% acrylic. Puzzle yarn comes in both variegated stripes, like I used for the scarf, and solid colors.

It is an easy to work with, soft yarn and I love the variety of colors. The variegated yarns use 4 coordination colors to make the stripes. The mossy green used for this scarf uses all shades of green but some of the other colorways use different colors so you have more obvious color changes. You can easily tailor this scarf for whoever you’re going to make this for.

If you order directly from Premier Yarns, be sure to sign up for their reward program where you’ll get a coupon and can start earning your own reward points and I’ll get reward points.

hdc: half double crochet

Notes

To adjust the width of your scarf, keep your starting chain an even number. Keep working rows until the scarf reaches your desired length.

The starting and ending instructions of the rows may be slightly different than other versions of the moss stitch. By chaining one and the beginning of the row and working into each chain one (turning chain) to end the next row, you’ll create a smooth edge of your fabric that looks finished even without a border.
