Here in Minnesota, we’re still stuck in that in-between time where summer hasn’t completely ended and fall hasn’t really started. The weather has been unseasonably warm and the leaves are taking their time to change.

I’m never ready to let go of summer but, at the same time, I love fall. I also love how sunflowers span the bridge of seasons and are a final nod of warm sunshine before we start preparing for winter.

Stitches

This simple sunflower is worked up in just 7 rounds and uses mostly basic stitches. The center starts with a magic circle and then is made by working single crochet stitches in 6 joined rounds.

The 7th and final round is made with puff stitches, chains, and single crochets.

The petals are made by working a puff stitch, chain 2, and single crochet back into the top of the same puff stitch and then another puff stitch all in the same stitch. You’ll then slip stitch into the stitch between each petal, which makes the petals stand out even more.

Since that last round has a lot of stitches in a little space, you’ll likely need to block your

Yarn

I usually recommend using cotton yarn or a cotton blend for coasters mainly because cotton is absorbent and can help protect your surfaces from condensation and spills.

I used Scheepjes Stone Washed XL which is an Aran weight cotton acrylic blend that comes in a range of gorgeous colors. It was super easy to work with and the stonewashed colors add a beautiful depth to the stitches.

You can also hold two stands of the regular, sport weight Scheepjes Stone Washed yarn together if you don’t have the XL version.

Any Category 4 weight cotton yarn should work for these coasters and if you have scraps of cotton yarn, in colors you’d like to use, this can be a perfect scrap yarn project.

Skill Level

While this is a simple crochet pattern, it is a bit beyond the beginner level so it is rated an Easy skill level. There are photos to help with the petal round which is the most difficult part of the pattern.
