This free small sunflower crochet pattern is perfect for adding a touch of sunshine to any crochet project. It’s easy to make, customizable, and a fun way to use up scrap yarn. They’re perfect for using as keychains, appliques, or you could hang them as a garland.

Within the last couple of weeks a gorgeous sunflower bloomed next to a mailbox right at the entrance to our neighborhood. It puts a smile on my face every time I turn to go home.
I was thinking about that huge sunflower while I was designing these small sunflowers. I want to carry a touch of sunshine with me as summer turns to fall and winter is just around the corner and now you can too!

Stitches
This simple sunflower only takes 5 rounds and mostly basic stitches. The center of the sunflower starts with a magic circle and then is made by working single crochet stitches in 4 joined rounds.
The 5th and final round is puff stitches, chains, and single crochets. Super simple.
Each petal is made by working a puff stitch, chain 2, and single crochet back into the top of the same puff stitch and then another puff stitch all in the same stitch. You’ll slip stitch into the stitch between each petal, making the petals stand out even more.
Once the petals are added, the sunflower may not lay flat and will benefit from blocking. I pinned each of the petals and lightly steamed the flowers so they’d lay flat.

Yarn
This is a perfect scrap yarn project that works with pretty much any small amounts of yarn you have on hand. You will use more of the yellow color but each sunflower weighed around 0.14 ounces total including the strap part. That’s not very much yarn at all!

I grabbed some leftover yarn from the striped scarf pattern that worked perfectly. Cotton to the Core from KnitPal is a cotton acrylic blend that is a category 3, DK weight yarn.
For the tutorial pictures, I used Cotton to the Core for the center of the flower and then Minikins by Premier Yarns for the petals. Minikins is a Fine weight yarn so the petals are a little smaller.

Skill Level
While this is a simple crochet pattern, it is a bit beyond the beginner level so I rated it an Easy skill level. There are photos to help with the petal round which is the most difficult part of the pattern.
