How to crochet an easy shawl

Does it get any easier than a simple shawl made with half double crochets and chains? I don’t think so. Expect that it is also asymmetrical which means that increases on this shawl are straight forward and simple.

Stitches used for the Cedar Creek Shawl

The first three quarters of the shawl is worked in all half double crochets with an increase either at the beginning or at the end of each row.

The last quarter alternated between sections of half double crochets, and half double crochet, chain 1, half double crochet (I call it an open hdc in the pattern notes and it is a lot like a moss stitch). There are still increases in the open hdc rows but they are the same as the other rows.

If you decide that you want your shawl a little bigger, just continue the striping pattern by adding 2 rows of open half double crochets to each open hdc section. (ex. the next hdc stripe will have 11 rows of open hdcs.) There are 3 solid hdc rows between each open hdc section.

Yarn used for the Cedar Creek Shawl

This crochet shawl was made using Comfy Cotton Blend yarn which you can get from Lion Brand Yarn. (There’s also a link further down to this yarn on Amazon.)

Comfy Cotton Blend is a mix of cotton and polyester that is easy to work with and has great drape. Looking closely at the yarn, it looks like they wound together a couple strands of cotton with a couple strands of polyester which gives even the solid colors some variety and depth.

There are 5 solid colors available in Comfy Cotton Blend (someone please make this is Moccachino and send me a picture) with the rest of the colorways being variegated.

Since the stitch pattern of this shawl is simple it will look great both in the solid colorways and in the variegated ones.

Abbreviations:

ch: chain
hdc(s): half double crochet
inc: 2 hdcs in the same stitch
st: stitch

Gauge: 4” x 4” = 14 hdcs by 12 rows

Finished Size: asymmetrical triangle:35” by 59” by 50”

Notes:

The shawl is an asymmetrical triangle that is first worked in solid half double crochets. The last quarter of the shawl is worked in stripes of open half double crochets (hdc, ch 1, hdc – like a single crochet moss stitch) and solid half double crochets.

There is an increase (inc) in each row, either at the beginning of the row or at the end of the row.

The stitch count increases by 1 with each row with the first row starting with 2 stitches. (ex. Row 110 will have 111 stitches.)

When you get to the open hdc sections (hdc, ch 1, hdc) keep your stitches loose especially on the chains. It is easy to tighten tension on these rows and end up with sections that are narrower than the solid half double crochet sections.
