Stitches
The square starts with half double crochets worked in a magic circle. Then you’ll work a round of puff stitches and chain stitches.
The next round works around those chain stitches to give you the outside part of the flower petals.
The rest of the rounds use either double crochet stitches or single crochet stitches. If you’d like to learn more about the squares, you can check out the Fountain Flower Square post.
Once you’ve made all your squares, you’ll join them together using a flat slip stitch seam or your favorite joining method. The flat stip stitch seam is a little slower than other joins, but it is so beautiful and looks great with the squares.
The simple border is made of a couple of rounds of single crochets and a final round of the crab stitch or reverse single crochet.
Even though the pattern uses mostly basic stitches, it is rated at an intermediate skill level since it isnโt a beginner pattern and is just a bit above an easy pattern due to the placement of the stitches. Once youโve done a few squares, they will be easy and youโll fly through them.
If you’d like a step-by-step photo tutorial of the squares, you can find that in the Fountain Flower Granny Squares post. The pdf version of the pattern also has a photo tutorial and a full stitch chart of the square.

Yarn
For this granny square baby blanket, we used Brava Worsted from WeCrochet / KnitPicks. It is a category 4, medium weight yarn that is 100% acrylic. It’s machine washable and dryable which is important to me when it comes to baby blankets. It is easy to work with and comes in a large variety of great colors.
Speaking of colors, I will mention that it is good idea to read the descriptions of the colors on the website. The color we used for the sample blanket is called Cream. The description says it is “a delicate off white color with peach undertones” which is a mild version of accurate. I think I would call it a peach color with off-white undertones depending on the lighting.

My husband thought they were two different blankets when I had it laid out and blocking away from the window compared to next to the window when I took pictures. The peach color really shines in natural light, but the yarn looks much more off-white in artificial lighting.
I would have been a little frustrated if I was looking for a true off-white or cream yarn, but thankfully the color is absolutely gorgeous and works perfectly for this particular blanket.
Of course you can use your own color scheme to match nursery colors or add a touch of whimsy. If you’d like to see these square with different colors, you’ll want to check out the granny square table runner.
This granny square baby blanket pattern will work well with any basic acrylic yarn or even a soft cotton. Below I have some ideas for you if you’d like to use a different type of yarn.
