Stitches
To keep this blanket as simple as possible, almost the entire blanket is made using half double crochet stitches.
You’ll start with a chain and then the main body of the blanket is half double crochets. To add a border, you’ll first do a round of single crochet stitches followed by a few rounds of hdc stitches.
If you haven’t learned foundation crochet stitches, they are a great skill, especially when crocheting blankets. Anytime I can avoid crocheting a long chain, I do! You can start this blanket with a foundation half double crochet row instead of a chain.

Yarn
This easy crochet baby blanket can be made with almost any worsted-weight yarn. I used Super Saver Ombre Yarn from Red Heart. It’s a 100% acrylic yarn. It is a super cost-effective yarn that holds up to wear and tear and many washings.
The ombre yarn changes color throughout the length of the yarn, so you don’t have to worry about color changes. Of course, you can use different colors and create the strips you’d like, but it is nice using yarn that does the work for you. Plus, there are fewer ends to weave in!

If you are looking for other yarn options, I have included some in the yarn substitution section. I tried to find economy yarns that come in some sort of color changing or ombre options.

Skill Level
This simple blanket is perfect for beginner crocheters who have down the basics and are ready to try a larger project. The main skills you’ll need to know are how to make a starting chain, half double crochet, single crochet, and work around the outside of your project.
The blanket actually looks cute without a border, so if that part seems a little too intimidating, you can skip it. If you haven’t added a border to a project yet, you can start with something quick and simple, like a dishcloth, to practice on.
When you use self-striping yarn, you don’t have to worry about color changes and you won’t have a ton of extra ends to weave in. It’s just another way this blanket looks more advanced than it is.
If you aren’t a beginner this is still a great project for you. It works up quickly and I found it a super relaxing pattern to work on while we were on a road trip.

Notes
You’ll first work the body of the blanket in all half double crochet stitches. To add a border, you’ll work a round of single crochet stitches and then a few rounds of half double crochet stitches.
To work the sides of the border, where you put 3 scs for every 2 rows, I like to sc at the end of the row, sc between that row and the next row, sc in the next row, then skip the next space between rows.
