Yarn used in the Chunky Blanket
In order to work a good chunky crochet throw pattern, you need good chunky yarn! I fell in love with the color options of Caron Colorama O’Go Yarn so I picked my two favorite colorways to use. Caron Colorama O’Go Yarn is a bulky weight, category 5, 100% acrylic yarn that is self-striping.
This was my first time using an O’Go yarn. Honestly, when they first released a yarn in a strange tube shape, I thought it seemed a bit gimmicky but it was actually really nice to work with.
Through trial and error, I figured out that one side unwraps the yarn from the outside in and the other side will pull from the inside. Although I’ve seen pictures and videos, showing people working from the side that unwraps out to in, I found it much easier to pull from the other side. Pulling from the inside allowed me to rest the yarn on any surface without the yarn getting stuck underneath itself as it unwrapped from the outside.
It’s the same concept as working with skeins of yarn and desperately trying to find the yarn from the center of the skein and hoping you don’t end up with yarn barf! With the O’Go yarn, you don’t have to worry about the yarn tangling in the middle though!

I let the color changes happen wherever they fell along the yarn. I think it gives the chunky blanket a bit of a scrappy, whimsical feel. I do think this would also work great as a scrap blanket project.
Since I used two different colorways, I just switched back and forth between colorways. I love how all of the colors work together so beautifully!
I saw that they even have Bernat Blanket Yarn in the O’GO style now so if you like that yarn for blankets, you can try it! Keep in mind it is a super bulky yarn instead of a bulky weight yarn so you’ll need a larger hook and your blanket will be larger.

Stitches Used in the Chunky Throw Free Pattern
Can you believe that all the gorgeous texture on this blanket is created by half double crochets and modifications of the half double crochet stitch, plus working in the back loop.
The half double crochet is one of the first stitches most beginners learn since it is one of the basic crochet stitches. It is an easy stitch to work and once you understand how it is modified in this pattern, you’ll love working on the modified version just as much as the regular version. Don’t worry, there are step-by-step photos in the pattern instructions so you’ll get the hang of the easy hdc modification.
If you’d like to see the modified hdc in use in another pattern, you won’t want to miss the Squishy and Chunky Baby Blanket Pattern.
The crochet throw blanket starts with a foundation row of half double crochets and from there, moves into the pattern repeat. It is a simple four-row repeat that ends with one more row of half double crochets. For the repeat, you’ll do two rows of modified half double crochets followed by two rows of regular half double crochets. It’s simple!
