How to Crochet a Rainbow Wall Hanging

Crocheting this rainbow wall hanging is fairly simple! The skills you’ll want to make sure you know before getting started include: working down both sides of a chain, half double crochet, puff stitches, slip stitches, increasing, and working in the back loops only. These aren’t super advanced techniques but maybe aren’t the most beginner-friendly either.

Yarn Used for the Rainbow Wall Hanging Crochet Pattern

This is a great project for using up your colorful worsted-weight scrap yarn. The whole rainbow wall hanging, even with the fringe, weighs less than 2 ounces, so it doesn’t use very much yarn at all.

For all of the wall hangings, I used Premier Anti-Pilling Everyday Worsted Weight yarn in the color Snow White for the neutral sections. For the colorful parts of each rainbow, I used whatever pretty worsted-weight yarn I dug out of my scrap bin.

I found that a US size 7, 4.5 mm hook worked well with the types of yarn I used, but you’ll potentially want to adjust your hook size if you are using much thinner or thicker yarn.

Stitches Used for the Boho Crochet Rainbow

The main stitches you’ll be using for the rainbow pattern are half double crochets. You’ll start with a short chain and work half double crochets down one side, then work 5 at the end of the chain which allows you to work down the other side of the chain without turning your work. The entire rainbow is made in a semi-oval shape.

To get an extra pop of texture, some of the half double crochet rows are worked in the back loop of the row below. You can have fun alternating where you use the back loop only rows with where you use different colors.

The second to last row has puff stitches as well as half double crochets. The puff stitches are done in a contrasting color, and I just carried the yarn across the back between the puff stitches. That row probably takes the longest to crochet in an otherwise fast pattern.

The rainbows are finished with one row of slip stitches and then some simple fringe. That’s it! They really are easy to make and once you start, you might end up making quite a few of them.

Hanging the Boho Rainbow

The simplest option for hanging the boho rainbows is to attach a 10″-20″ piece of yarn somewhere on the back. I tied the yarn around the two stretches of yarn that were pulled across between puff stitches.

I have two different rainbows hanging in my house and I want to give them some time to see how they hold up just being hung with one piece of yarn.

If they start to bend or lose shape, I will probably get some fabric glue and make a cardboard backing for the rainbows. Simple.
