Choosing Yarn for the Textured Scarf
You can pretty much reach for any soft worsted weight yarn to make this cozy crochet scarf.
For the sample, I used I Love This Yarn from Hobby Lobby. It’s a great economy yarn with many choices of yarn colors. Of course, I picked a neutral color because that’s what I am drawn to, but this scarf will look great in your favorite color.
I am excited to see all of the different colors that are used and I’d love to see it in a self-striping yarn or with a marled yarn. If only I had more time to crochet multiple versions.

Stitches for that Gorgeous Texture
The majority is this scarf is made using the sedge stitch which is a stitch combination of three different stitches worked into the same stitch. This creates a fabric that is textured, dense, and beautiful.
To add extra texture to the fabric, in this pattern, the stitches are worked in the back loop creating ridges of popped stitches. The ridges created by working in the stitches in the back loop make this lovely textured crochet scarf. Aren’t those stitches just gorgeous?
The basic crochet stitches you need to know to work the sedge stitch are single crochet stitches, half double crochet stitches, double crochet stitches, chains, and skipping chains or stitches.
This scarf also starts with a foundation single crochet and stitches are worked in the back loops only so it may be a bit beyond beginner skill level. If you want to understand the basic stitches used, don’t miss the Sedge Stitch Crochet Tutorial.

Abbreviations:
fsc: foundation single crochet
ch(s): chain(s)
sc: single crochet
hdc: half double crochet
dc: double crochet
blo: back loop only
st(s): stitch(es)
Gauge: 4” x 4” = 15 sts by 6 rows
Finished Size: 9” wide by 66” long
Notes:
The ch 1 (turning chain) at the beginning of each row does not count as a stitch. The ch 1 could technically be your first single crochet of that row, however, it is easiest to work the last stitch of the row into the hdc of the row below instead of that ch 1.
Starting in Row 3, you’ll be working your stitches in the single crochets of the row below, except for the last stitch of the row which is worked into the hdc of the previous row.
The scarf is worked lengthwise. To adjust the length of your scarf, keep your starting row a multiple of 3.
To start with a chain instead of a foundation single crochet, chain a multiple of 3+1 then sc in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across.
Parenthesis () are used to show which stitches are worked together in the same stitch.
All stitches are worked in the back loop only.
